Fruit of the Spirit 5 Minute Devotional
Let me ask you a question. Are you spiritually healthy? How can you assess your spiritual health anyway?
You go to the doctor to find out how your blood sugar is doing or your weight or heart. You can check your credit report to find out if your finances are okay. It might be a little bit harder to see if your marriage is healthy or not. Maybe you can assess it based on how few fights you have. Maybe you are romantic with your spouse. Perhaps you are kind and courteous.
But how do you assess spiritual health?
We talk about seasons of life. Are you in an overwhelming crazy season? Maybe you have multiple kids under 5 in the house. Perhaps you just received a disappointing diagnosis from your doctor. Or it could be that you forgot where you put your keys and you just scoured the house for 10 minutes only to discover them in the door.
These are the kinds of things that can chip away at our spiritual health. If we don’t assess our spiritual health though, just like with physical, emotional, financial, and other areas of our life, it can easily erode and weaken. Physically you can see evidence of that. As you approach mid life it’s harder to lose weight, your skin is not as vibrant as it used to be, your hair is turning gray.

Fortunately for us, God has given us a check up. A check up, checklist for our spiritual health. This check up is the fruit of the Spirit. God says, ‘Hey, pay attention to these nine attributes. These are the fruit of the Spirit. They can give you the heart check that you need.’
Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self control. Against such things there is no law.
Heart check. That’s what they are. If you are doing well at love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control, guess what you are pretty spiritually healthy. It’s a pretty tall order though.
I don’t know about you, but usually I can only master a few of these qualities at the same time. I never fully have a grasp on all of them. That’s okay. You constantly strive to do better.
